The Garmisch-Partenkirchen Golf Club looks back on a long and storied history: Founded in 1929 and opened in 1930, the original course was initially under the supervision of the U.S. Armed Forces after World War II, before the decision was made in the 1970s to relocate to Gut Buchwies near Oberau. Since its expansion in 1990, the par-72 course has been a full-fledged 18-hole facility that offers tailored challenges with lengths ranging from 5,222 to 6,156 meters from four tees.
What makes this an exceptional alpine golf course is that the terrain is surprisingly flat and can be easily navigated on foot, while spectacular views of the Zugspitze massif and the surrounding mountains unfold time and again throughout the entire round.
Here you’ll find numerous other travel reports on the world’s most beautiful golf courses.
The front nine begins with a Par-5 hole up to 479 meters long, whose Fairway is framed by dense trees and whose slightly elevated green sits imposingly against the backdrop of the Zugspitze. On the following holes, precise aim proves to be the key to success: While on hole 3 a crossing ditch must be skillfully played over, hole 4 holds a historical curiosity—right at the ditch crossing stands an old boundary stone that once separated the Electorate of Bavaria from the County of Werdenfels.
After two more long par-4 holes, the seventh hole features a sharp 90-degree dogleg from elevated Tees, before the eighth hole—the only par-3 in the first half of the round—awaits with three well-placed bunker complexes.
The Back Nine promises maximum variety with a balanced mix of three par-3, three par-4, and three par-5 holes. Precision off the tee is required on the 10th hole due to a narrow fairway flanked by trees, while the 12th hole, a Par-3, delights players with a significantly elevated tee box.
Water comes into play in abundance starting on the 13th hole: This picturesque, downhill Par-5 requires tactical finesse around a water hazard at the bend in the fairway and offers risk-takers a bold carry option over two streams. The finale culminates in a truly unique feature: Hole 18 concludes as a par-3 up to 160 meters long, where the shot to the green must be played over a massive Bunker under the watchful eyes of spectators on the clubhouse terrace.

After the final Putt, the sunny terrace invites you to wind down, while the attentive club team ensures a comfortable round—for example, by providing beverage service on the course on hot days. A stop at the pro shop is the perfect way to round out your visit to this historic course.
