Located right at the foot of the imposing Wetterstein Mountains, nestled between the idyllic villages of Ehrwald and Lermoos, lies the well-maintained course of the Tiroler Zugspitzgolf Club in Austria. Anyone who associates alpine golf with grueling uphill climbs will be pleasantly surprised here: The course runs across a flat high plateau and is ideal for walking, while dogs are also expressly welcome on the course.
The well-designed nine-hole layout offers a full 18-hole experience thanks to two separate tees per hole. The front nine is a Par-36 round known as the “Zugspitze” (3,003 meters from the forward tees), while the back nine is played as the “Sonnenspitze” (3,002 meters). A modern clubhouse with a reception area, pro shop, and restaurant forms the stylish centerpiece of the course.
Here you’ll find numerous other travel reports on the world’s most beautiful golf courses.
The “Zugspitze” round begins directly below the clubhouse with a Par-4 hole that is up to 348 meters long and doglegs to the right. The subsequent 442-meter-long Par-5 proves to be a classic risk-and-reward hole, with streams and fairway bunkers defending the green. This is followed by hole 3, a Par-3 up to 169 meters long, where the ball must be carried over a pond.
On holes 4 and 5, meandering streams, wetlands, and cleverly placed wooden huts define the landscape. The path leads over the Loisach Bridge to the sixth hole, a 311-meter-long dogleg to the left, where a sculpture made of golf clubs in the water hazard on the right offers a surprising sight.
After the wide Fairway of the seventh hole, the visual highlight of the front nine awaits on the eighth: This par-3, up to 175 meters long, plays directly toward the Zugspitze massif and, due to sand bunkers on the right, requires a shot over the left half of the green. The finale is a par-5 double dogleg up to 512 meters long, whose kidney-shaped green is guarded by four Bunkers.
