Around two hours' drive from Copenhagen lies the small Danish town of Kerteminde. There, Thomas Kirk Kristiansen - fourth-generation Lego heir and current head of the empire - and his team have created a world-class golf resort. The result is an overall concept with 27 holes, including a boutique hotel and spa, which does not need to shy away from international comparison with the best in the industry and sets new standards in terms of golf, design and service.
Architecture in touch with nature
Viewed from the entrance, the lodges appear very inconspicuous as they are integrated into an earth wall. However, the very spacious and bright rooms have a glass front at the front, which allows a wide view of the room terrace and the golf course - either the Academy Course or the ninth hole of the Great Northern Course. An expansion of the current 15 lodges by a further 52 hotel rooms is planned for 2026.

The clubhouse includes a reception, pro store and restaurant. It impresses not least with its architecture: the striking roof was inspired by a paper folding technique and impresses with its clear and attractive structures as a typical representative of classic, no-frills Danish design. The professionalism of Lego is also evident in the brand management: the resort's logo is omnipresent, even the sprinkler covers on the golf courses are characterized by the stylized bird.

Great Northern Championship Course
The Nicklaus Design team is responsible for this championship course with the Golden Bear. The shaping alone took around 2 years and more than 3.4 million tons of sand were moved. The result is an absolute top course that is also suitable for hosting international tournaments. Although the Par 72 course with its five tees was designed in links style, it is anything but flat.
On both the front and back nine, you first play up a slope. Water also often comes into play on the round, as Kerteminde borders directly on the Baltic Sea. All the holes, some of which have clearly undulating Fairways and greens, require clear course management, and the two closing holes of the front and back nine are particularly memorable: the 9th is a par 3 up to 183 meters long over water towards the clubhouse to a transverse green, while the 18th is a maximum 490-meter-long par 5 that borders a large lake on the left and ends with an island green. Another design treat is hole 15, in front of whose green a watercourse leads downhill in terraces.

Academy Course at the Great Northern
The Academy Course, a Par 30 course, was also designed by Nicklaus Design and combines links elements with plenty of water, especially on the closing holes. The course presents even experienced golfers with some tricky challenges, especially the final Par 3 with the teeshot over water onto the transverse green.
Great Northern is undoubtedly worth a visit. The service is excellent, the golf on offer is world class and, in combination with the spa and the wonderful lodges, is also ideal for non-golfing companions. It is easy to get here by car from the north of Germany, otherwise a flight to Copenhagen is recommended.
