TaylorMade presents the latest generation of P790 Irons, the fifth in the Players Distance range. The club series, one of TaylorMade's most successful, combines the look and feel of a classic Players Iron with the performance and forgiveness of modern technology. They are aimed at a broad target group of golfers, from ambitious amateurs to Tour professionals, who are looking for a versatile Iron that offers both length and precision. Thanks to different shaft options, they are designed to appeal to golfers with different swing speeds.
The TaylorMade P790 Irons feature a number of technical innovations aimed at improving performance:
New face material: the new 4340M steel face is said to be 20% stronger than the previous generation material. This should allow for a thinner, faster face, potentially leading to more ball speed and longer carry distances. TaylorMade also claims an up to 24% larger sweetspot compared to the previous model.
FLTD CG (Flighted Center of Gravity): A central feature of the P790 irons is the FLTD CG™ system. A tungsten weight is strategically placed in the individual iron heads to adjust the center of gravity of the golf club to the task at hand. In the long irons (3-5), the center of gravity is low and to the rear, which should allow for easier launch and more forgiveness. In the medium irons (6-7), the weight moves slightly further forward and upwards, which should increase stability and improve distance control. In the short irons (8-PW), the center of gravity is higher and further forward, which should enable more spin and precision for approach shots.
Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction: the "Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction" with honeycomb cutouts is another weight reduction technology. Cutouts on the back of the club head save weight and are placed deeper in the head, which should lead to a higher moment of inertia (MOI) and more stability.
Thru-Slot Speed Pocket: The "Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™" in Irons 4-7 is a slot in the sole of the club designed to increase the flexibility of the clubface and enlarge the sweetspot. This is intended to maintain ball speed and distance even on miss-hits.
SpeedFoam Air: The hollow construction of the P790 irons is filled with SpeedFoam™ Air, an ultra-light foam that is designed to dampen vibrations and create a comfortable feel at impact.
Visually, the TaylorMade P790 irons aim to come close to "Players irons". The topline is very slim and narrow, which gives the irons an elegant look. Overall, there are few edges and angles on the club head, resulting in a very clean design with many smooth surfaces. In the address position, the irons look very sporty. However, the sole is relatively thick, which is good for playability and forgiveness. The finish of the irons is a matt "Tour Satin Scratch Finish". The P790 logo is now centered on the back of the club head and no longer on the heel as on the predecessors.
