The golf market is developing rapidly in terms of technology. While the digitalization of the sport is often focused on performance optimization, Garmin' s two latest models - the Approach J1 and the Approach G82 - show how different the target group approach can be: From the playful promotion of young talent to data-based analysis for performance-oriented everyday life.
With the Approach J1, Garmin presents a GPS golf watch that is explicitly aimed at children and young people. The manufacturer's aim here is not so much to create a highly complex data center, but rather a tool for the correct understanding of playing rhythm and strategy.
The case, with a diameter of 43 millimetres and a weight of just 29 grams, has been designed in such a way that it does not hinder the swing. A key feature for the young target group is the reduced, child-friendly presentation of data on the 1.3-inch AMOLED touch display.
The most important functions of the Approach J1:
Functions such as heart rate measurement or contactless payment have been deliberately omitted from this model in order to sharpen the focus on the core golf functions. With a GPS battery life of up to 15 hours, the device is designed for extensive training days and tournament rounds.
At the other end of the spectrum is the Approach G82. This is a combined device that combines GPS navigation with the functionality of a portable Launch-Monitor. Garmin is targeting ambitious golfers who want to precisely measure their performance both on the driving range and directly on the course.
At its heart is a high-resolution 5-inch touch display, which is used both for course navigation and for analyzing shot data.
The most important functions of the Approach G82:
With a battery life of up to 25 hours in GPS mode, the device underlines its claim to be a reliable companion for all-day golfing activities. The G82 can also be integrated into a comprehensive ecosystem by linking it with other Garmin products, such as the Approach Z30.
With these two models, Garmin is showing a clear differentiation in golf technology: the Approach J1 focuses on making it easier for junior players to get into golf through reduction and playful elements. The Approach G82, on the other hand, provides experienced players with a database that was previously only available in stationary training centers. Both products underline the trend towards using technical support to make golf more comprehensible and - depending on the objective - also more effective.
